MAGFest is in a week and a half. I’m pretty excited about it. This year is going to be bigger than usual. Not in terms of panel load or books (although, I will have plenty of both), but in terms of plans and of what this year represents.
Outside of MAGFest, 2020 is proving to be a major year of upheaval and change. Not just in my literary career or my personal life but for everyone. Anyone paying attention to politics knows how unprecedented current events are. We’re well outside of life-as-usual and the term historic doesn’t seem to do it justice. It’s a terrifying time in some ways, but it’s also an exciting time. We read about these times in the history books, and as such, we have the chance to define what we do and who we are, as people and as a people.
It’s a scary time ecologically but I am unconvinced that we’ve passed any point of no-return. I think change and meaningful change can be implemented in time to save the species, and to save the species we share this planet with. But it’s about more than personal accountability; it is about demanding and holding others accountable. I’ll let the meaning of those words register with you how you wish, but there is no one who should be sitting this out.
2020 is the start of so much new. It’s exciting and it’s right around the corner. Enjoy the season, enjoy the holidays if that’s your thing, but with the new year comes a new chance, a rebirth.
Let’s do it together.
