Must-See TV

Despite a general hatred of Eraserhead, I love David Lynch (Dune is a masterpiece!). I had planned to start watching Twin Peeks tonight, watching one episode a night. Having just completed the first episode, I think there’s a very good chance I may be up until dawn, watching the whole first season. It’s that good.

It’s fun watching TV for another era. Made in 1990 (and so, largely an 80s show), Twin Peeks was made when television viewing was still ‘event television’. VHS players were still a luxury and while buying movies was becoming common place, whole seasons of television on VHS were a rarity. If you missed an episode of a show when it broadcast, your chances of catching up were nil (syndication was still a rare fate for a show). So a show like Twin Peeks has a whole different pacing from shows of today. Not better or worse; just different. And a lot of fun to see.

I think I’m going to enjoy my new addiction, almost fifteen years after it first aired.
